I was sat on the tube today, feeling hot, sticky and uncomfortable, when I saw this poster: way to gain some perspective. It prompted me to donate to Action Aid.

Sanitation is a real problem for refugee women. Women in refugee camps may have to share one toilet with over 100 people, with limited access to soap, making washing their clothes difficult and during menstruation, women may have to use old rags or skirts. They are unable to launder these privately, they may even have to wash these items in the one pot provided for them to cook food in. As well as the obvious physical implications, this can lead to feelings of shame and a loss of dignity.

I’m watching Soccer Aid with the other half, there’s football and film/TV stars to keep him happy and charity deeds for me. Watching Cat Deeley try and explain why you should donate to help children whilst choked with emotion was one of the most moving things I’ve seen in a while… but let’s just keep it simple:
Soccer Aid is no ordinary football match. The money raised tonight will change the lives of some of the world’s poorest children.
Every £1 raised by Soccer Aid is being matched by the UK government – doubling your donation. Getting money out of the government and going to a good cause? I’m in! I hope you are too.
Every pound you donate will be doubled by the UK Government, up to a total of £5 million, so your donation will go twice as far for children.

No-one enjoys being in hospital, so anything that can be done to make it a more bearable experience has got to be good. Recently a friend of mine has been spending a lot of time hospital visiting, so I’ve made a donation to Basingstoke Hospital Radio and hope they play some good tunes while she’s there!
Basingstoke Hospital Radio is a free service run by volunteers.

inDid you know when you auction an item for charity on ebay they will reduce your fees by the percentage you’re donating? So I’ve listed a dress with 100% of the price going to Great Ormond Street Hospital and ebay have waived 100% of the fees.
I’ve never listed an item for charity on e-bay, it was surprisingly simple – there were a whole list of charities that you can choose to support. Now I just need to cross my fingers and hope the dress goes for a good price!

Let’s be British today and talk about the weather: it’s rubbish! There’s flooding all over the place.
31 homes in Buckskin, Basingstoke (where I live) have been flooded – with sewage, not just rainwater. Families are being evacuated and I feel for them, it must be pretty miserable. But it’s nothing like the floods in other parts of the country… or the world for that matter.
I’m not one of these people who thinks we should ignore foreign aid and spend all the money sorting out our own flooding issues. The third world aren’t likely to be responsible for climate change and the resulting freak weather events, I doubt they have insurance cover either.
But today I thought I’d try and send aid to someone in the UK. I’m donating to the Devon Flood Fund. http://devoncf.com/how-to-give/devon-flood-fund/
Maybe I could have helped people closer to home, but if Buckskin gets washed away I’m not 100% certain that’s a bad thing and frankly it’s pretty hard to find a way to donate to help people in need there – things just aren’t set up for that… or maybe it’s just not that bad.

inIn 2012 over 14 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed worldwide.
Caring for sick people takes a certain kind of person, it’s certainly not one of my talents (as my other half will testify). But standing around ratting a collection tin – I can do that. So I will: today I’ve signed up as a volunteer collector for The Great Daffodil Appeal this March. http://www.mariecurie.org.uk/en-gb/your-money/
I can’t wait to hear from them…

inHow could I not support this? It’s incredible. Rats that are trained to save lives, either by sniffing out landmines or TB. Who knew they could do this? Fascinating. Please follow the link: http://www.apopo.org/en/
I wasn’t intending to make another donation today, but I had to post about this, so I had to support it. Enough said.

Today I returned from a fantastic trip to Canada, during which I relaxed and (over) indulged myself – I was aware I made little or no progress on my plan to change the world. In fact I created a huge carbon footprint with the 3800 mile flight and enjoyed a lifestyle (just for the week) that some people probably dream of.
During our trip we visited: Hard Rock, Toronto; Hard Rock, Niagara Falls, Ontario; and even crossed into the US to visit Hard Rock, Niagara Falls, NY. My partner is a huge fan of the Hard Rock Cafe, but far less enthusiastic about charity. Outside one of the restaurants staff were actively collecting for the Why Hunger initiative and at my suggestion my partner dug out the suggested $2 donation that feeds a child for a day and took the wristband offered to him. I know he never would have made a donation without prompting and 3 days later he’s still wearing the wristband.
At the time he suggested that I should consider getting him to donate as my action for the day, but when we were drinking beverages ranging in price from $3 to $19 and most meals were large enough to feed at least 2 people rather than 1, a $2 donation hardly seems sufficient. In fact even the postcard I sent home cost more than $2… However, my partner’s charitable contribution and willingness to get a little bit more involved, that’s not a bad achievement.
Today I’ve gone online and made a donation of $2 for every day for the rest of this month, so that’s 1 child fed until the end of January. It still seems a trivial contribution and I’ll definitely be thinking about how else I can support this initiative during 2014.
