So it’s that time of year again, when people look back and wish they’d done more and promise to do better next year. Or maybe that’s just me…
20 years ago I wanted to change the world and I was totally confident I could. I wanted to be a teacher or a lawyer; I was a vegetarian; and I cared about environmental issues and animal rights. I thought that by the time I was 35 I’d be a ‘proper’ grown-up: successful, settled and making a significant contribution to society.
In some ways I’ve done those things and I’m aware of how lucky I am. I always feel that I should be more selfless and do more to give something back. So I’ve been looking for a way to do that; something meaningful, something achievable, something sustainable.
I’ve decided that I will do something every day during 2014 to try and make the world a little bit better. I visited the following site to get some ideas – perhaps I could just follow their suggestions every day: simple! http://www.365act.com/actions/22.html However, today’s action was: ‘Don’t buy COCAINE’ (Yep, that was simple, I wasn’t planning on buying any!) Reading on I decided that it could be interpreted as: ‘support fair trade’, something I definitely could do more of.
This blog is a way to record my efforts, so that the next time someone is looking for a way to make a difference, perhaps this’ll help and maybe (if I’m really lucky) other people will post on my page to give me some ideas when I run out! Which I am sure will happen at some point.
